Book of Kells

c. 800 · 9th century

The Book of Kells is an illuminated manuscript of the four Gospels in Latin, made around 800, probably in part at the monastery of Iona and completed at Kells in Ireland. Its elaborate decoration of interlace, animals and human figures makes it the masterpiece of Insular art. It has been kept at Trinity College Dublin since the 17th century.
