Bourba
Bourba was the title of the supreme ruler, or emperor, of the Jolof Empire in Senegambia. The bourba exercised nominal supremacy over a network of semi-autonomous rulers of the constituent kingdoms. The office functioned more as a centre of ritual authority and arbitration than of direct administration, a structure that eased consolidation but left the empire prone to secession.
