Camino Real de Tierra Adentro

16th–19th century · 16th century · Also known as Royal Road of the Interior Land

The Camino Real de Tierra Adentro was the Spanish colonial royal road running some 2,500 km north from Mexico City through the silver-mining towns of New Spain to Santa Fe in New Mexico. Juan de Oñate's colonists travelled it in 1598, and supply caravans, missionaries, soldiers and traders used it for nearly three centuries, binding the northern frontier provinces to the viceregal capital.
