Cenél nEógain
The Cenél nEógain were a dynasty of the northern Uí Néill in Ireland, claiming descent from Eógan, son of Niall of the Nine Hostages. From their royal centre at Grianan of Aileach they dominated the kingdom of Ailech, held the high kingship in alternation with the southern Uí Néill and expanded into mid-Ulster. Their leading branches were the Mac Lochlainn and the Ua Néill, ancestors of the O'Neills of Tyrone.
