Chaamba

Also known as Chaamba tribe

The Chaamba are an Arabic-speaking nomadic tribal confederation of the northern Algerian Sahara, centred on the region of Ouargla, Metlili and El Golea. They herded camels, traded and controlled caravan routes, and dealt with the oasis towns of the region. In the 19th century many Chaamba served the French as camel troops in the conquest of the Sahara.
