Chahar Mongols

Also known as Chahars

The Chahar are a Mongol people of Inner Mongolia. In the 16th century they formed one of the six tumens of Dayan Khan's restored Mongol realm and were the personal following of the Great Khan. Their ruler Ligdan Khan tried to reunite the Mongols by force in the 1620s but was driven west by the Manchus, and in 1635 his son submitted to Hong Taiji, bringing the Chahar into the Qing state.
