Char Bouba war

1673–1677 · 17th century · Also known as Shurbubba

The Char Bouba war was a conflict in south-western Mauritania between the Berber Zawaya scholarly tribes, led by the reforming imam Nasir al-Din, and Hassani Arab warrior groups. The Hassani won by about 1677. The outcome fixed a lasting division of society into warrior and scholarly classes and led to the rise of the emirates of Trarza and Brakna.
