Charles Gasyonga II
Charles Gasyonga II was the last Omugabe, or king, of Ankole, succeeding Kahaya II in 1944. His reign saw the late-colonial rivalry between Bahima and Bairu and between Protestant and Catholic factions. He lost his throne in 1967, when Milton Obote's government abolished Uganda's kingdoms, and unlike Buganda, Bunyoro and Toro, Ankole's kingship was not restored as a cultural institution after 1993.
