Charles II of Naples

1254–1309 · 13th century · Also known as Charles the Lame, Charles of Salerno

Charles II, called the Lame, was king of Naples from 1285 to 1309. A son of Charles I of Anjou, he was captured by Roger of Lauria in a naval battle in the Bay of Naples in 1284 during the War of the Sicilian Vespers and held by the Aragonese until 1288. The Peace of Caltabellotta of 1302 left Sicily to the Aragonese, and he governed the mainland kingdom.
