Chevalier de Chaumont

1640–1710 · 17th century · Also known as Alexandre de Chaumont

Alexandre, Chevalier de Chaumont, was a French naval officer and diplomat who led Louis XIV's first embassy to King Narai of Ayutthaya in 1685. He was instructed to seek the king's conversion to Christianity, which Narai politely declined, but the embassy won privileges for French missionaries and was followed by a Siamese embassy to Versailles in 1686.
