Choe regime

1196–1258 · 12th century · Also known as Choe military regime

The Choe regime was the line of four military dictators of the Choe family who ruled Goryeo Korea from 1196 to 1258 while the kings remained figureheads. Founded by Choe Chung-heon, it governed through its own household agencies and private troops, including the Sambyeolcho. Under Choe U the court withdrew to Ganghwa Island in 1232 to resist the Mongols, and the regime fell when Choe Ui was murdered in 1258.
