Clades Lolliana

16 BCE · 1st century BCE · Also known as Lollian disaster

The clades Lolliana was a Roman defeat in 16 BCE, when the Sugambri, Usipetes and Tencteri crossed the Rhine and routed the legate Marcus Lollius, capturing the eagle of the Fifth Legion. Though limited in scale, the disgrace brought Augustus to Gaul and led to the campaigns of Drusus in Germania from 12 BCE.
