Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise is a ruined monastery on the River Shannon in County Offaly, Ireland, founded by Saint Ciarán around 545. It became one of Ireland's leading centres of learning, art and royal burial, and its remains include several churches, round towers and the carved Cross of the Scriptures. It declined after the 12th century and was plundered by English forces in 1552.
