Comtadin Jews
The Comtadin Jews, or Pope's Jews, were the Jewish communities of the papal territories of Avignon and the Comtat Venaissin, where they found refuge after expulsions from France in the 14th century. From the 17th century they were confined to four communities, at Avignon, Carpentras, Cavaillon and L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, and kept a distinct liturgy and Judeo-Provençal dialect.
