Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador

1986– · 20th century · Also known as CONAIE

The Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE) is the main organisation of Ecuador's indigenous peoples, founded in 1986. Its uprising of June 1990 put indigenous land and cultural rights on the national agenda, and its protests helped bring down Presidents Abdalá Bucaram in 1997 and Jamil Mahuad in 2000. It has led mass protests against fuel subsidy cuts, as in 2019.
