Congo Arab war

1892–1894 · 19th century

The Congo Arab war was fought from 1892 to 1894 between the Congo Free State and the Swahili-Arab traders of the eastern Congo, whose power had been built by Tippu Tip. Free State columns under Francis Dhanis, aided by African allies, took the trading towns of Nyangwe and Kasongo in 1893 and defeated the leaders Sefu and Rumaliza, bringing the east under Leopold II's control.
