Constantin Carathéodory
Constantin Carathéodory (1873–1950) was a Greek mathematician who spent most of his career in Germany. He made major contributions to the calculus of variations, measure theory and the theory of functions, and gave an axiomatic formulation of thermodynamics. In 1920 the Greek government invited him to organise the Ionian University of Smyrna, which was never able to open; he later taught at Athens and Munich.
