Contribution system
The contribution system was the Swedish practice of extracting revenue from occupied territories, especially in Germany and the Baltic, to fund the armies stationed there. It allowed a poor and thinly populated kingdom to maintain great-power forces. The system made the Swedish Empire's military effort partly self-financing but depended on continued occupation and war.
