1188 · 12th century

The Cortes of León of 1188 was an assembly summoned by King Alfonso IX of León at the start of his reign, at which elected representatives of the towns sat for the first time alongside nobles and bishops. Its decrees guaranteed justice and the protection of property and promised consultation of the assembly on war and peace. In 2013 UNESCO recognised its documents as the oldest record of the European parliamentary system.
