Cortes of Tomar

1581 · 16th century

The Cortes of Tomar was the assembly of the Portuguese estates held at Tomar in April 1581, which recognised Philip II of Spain as King Philip I of Portugal. In return Philip promised that Portugal would keep its own laws, offices, currency and colonial administration, and that only Portuguese would hold posts there. These terms defined the Iberian Union of 1580-1640.
