Da Cruz family
The Da Cruz family were an Afro-Portuguese dynasty of prazo holders on the Zambezi in Mozambique. From their fortified base at Massangano, above Tete, they commanded Chikunda soldiers, taxed river trade and raided for slaves and ivory. Under António Vicente da Cruz, known as Bonga, they defied Portugal in the mid-nineteenth century, and their power was finally broken by Portuguese campaigns in 1888.
