Dangbe
Dangbe is the python deity of Ouidah, on the coast of Benin, honoured since the time of the kingdom of Hueda, or Whydah. Royal pythons were sacred in the town and could not be harmed, and European visitors of the 17th and 18th centuries described the cult and its priestesses. After Dahomey conquered Whydah in 1727 the cult continued, and the Temple of Pythons in Ouidah remains a centre of Vodun worship.
