Di Qing
Di Qing was a Chinese general of the Northern Song dynasty who led campaigns against the Western Xia and against the rebellion of Nong Zhigao in Guangxi. Born to a poor family in Xihe, Fenzhou, he was made commander of Yanzhou in 1038 and fought in the war with the Western Xia, going into battle in a bronze mask. On the advice of Fan Zhongyan he read the Zuo Zhuan and became a versed strategist, rising to Assistant Commissioner of the Bureau of Military Affairs. Of the 25 battles he fought, he was best known for a night raid on Kunlun Pass in 1053. Folklore held him to be an incarnation of the God of Military Arts, and three Qing novels, the Romance of Di Qing, tell his story.
