Diego de Almagro

c. 1475–1538 · 16th century

Diego de Almagro was a Spanish conquistador and partner of Francisco Pizarro in the conquest of Peru. In 1534 Charles V granted him the Governorate of New Toledo south of Pizarro's lands, and he led the first Spanish expedition into Chile in 1535–1537. His claim to Cusco led to war with the Pizarros, who defeated him at Las Salinas in 1538 and had him executed.
