Diyar Bakr
Diyar Bakr was the medieval Arabic name for the northernmost province of the Jazira, the upper Tigris basin around Amid (modern Diyarbakır) and Mayyafariqin. Named after the Arab tribe of Bakr ibn Wa'il, it was contested by Byzantines, Hamdanids and Buyids before the Kurdish Marwanid dynasty ruled it from the 980s to the 1080s, when it passed to the Seljuks.
