18th century · 18th century

Dzata is the site of the stone-walled capital of the Venda kingdom in the Nzhelele valley of Limpopo province, South Africa, traditionally founded by the Singo dynasty after it crossed the Limpopo around 1700. Its ruins, with dressed-stone walls in a tradition linked to Great Zimbabwe, are a national monument. In Venda tradition it is remembered as the royal seat of the great ruler Thohoyandou.
