Eighth Crusade

1270 · 13th century

The Eighth Crusade was the expedition led by Louis IX of France against Tunis in 1270. The crusaders landed at Carthage in July, hoping to convert or subdue the Hafsid ruler al-Mustansir, but disease swept the camp and Louis died there in August. His brother Charles of Anjou negotiated a treaty by which the Hafsids paid an indemnity and renewed tribute to Sicily, and the army withdrew.
