Empire on which the sun never sets

The 'empire on which the sun never sets' is a phrase describing an empire so extensive that some part of it is always in daylight. It was first applied to the Spanish Empire under the Habsburgs, especially after the union with Portugal in 1580, when its possessions spanned Europe, the Americas, Africa and Asia. It was later used of the British Empire.
