Equites

Also known as equestrian order, equestrian

The equites, or equestrian order, were the second rank of the Roman aristocracy below the senators. Originally Rome's cavalry, they became a wealthy class of businessmen and, under the Roman Empire, filled important administrative posts such as prefect of Egypt. The term 'equestrian' also describes the cavalry traditions that shaped the Oyo Empire's military culture.
