Equatoria
Equatoria is a region in the far south of present-day South Sudan. It was organised as a province of the Egyptian Sudan in the 1870s, first under Samuel Baker and then Charles Gordon, to extend Egyptian rule up the White Nile and suppress the slave trade. Its later governor, Emin Pasha, was cut off by the Mahdist revolt until rescued by Henry Morton Stanley in 1889. It is now divided into three states.
