Eratosthenes

c. 276–c. 194 BCE · 3rd century BCE · Also known as Eratosthenes of Cyrene

Eratosthenes of Cyrene was a Greek scholar who became head of the Library of Alexandria under the Ptolemies. He made a remarkably close estimate of the Earth's circumference from the angle of the sun at Syene and Alexandria, drew a map of the known world with lines of latitude and longitude, and devised a method for finding prime numbers. His geography, quoted by Strabo, described Arabia and its peoples.
