Ethiopian–Mahdist War

1885–1889 · 19th century · Also known as Abyssinian–Sudanese War

The Ethiopian–Mahdist War was fought between the Ethiopian Empire and the Mahdist State of Sudan. After the Ethiopians helped evacuate Egyptian garrisons, Mahdist forces raided Ethiopia and sacked Gondar in 1888. At Gallabat, or Metemma, in March 1889 the Ethiopian army was winning when Emperor Yohannes IV was mortally wounded, and it retreated in disorder.
