Fakhruddin Mubarak Shah

r. 1338–1349 · 14th century

Fakhruddin Mubarak Shah was the founder of the Sonargaon Sultanate in eastern Bengal. An armour-bearer of the Tughluq governor of Sonargaon, he seized power on his master's death in 1338 and declared independence from Muhammad bin Tughluq, the first ruler in Bengal to break from the Delhi Sultanate. He struck his own coins and campaigned against Chittagong. The traveller Ibn Battuta visited his realm.
