Fraser Canyon War

1858 · 19th century

The Fraser Canyon War was a conflict in August 1858 between gold miners of the Fraser River gold rush, many of them Americans, and the Nlaka'pamux people of the Fraser Canyon in British Columbia. After clashes over the miners' intrusion, volunteer companies attacked and burned Nlaka'pamux villages until truces were agreed with Nlaka'pamux leaders, notably Chief Spintlum. It took place as the new colony of British Columbia was being established.
