Fraxinetum

c. 890–973 · 9th century · Also known as Fraxinet

Fraxinetum was a fortified base set up by Muslim adventurers from al-Andalus around 890 near modern La Garde-Freinet, in the Maures hills of Provence. From it raiders controlled Alpine passes, plundered monasteries and in 972 captured Abbot Majolus of Cluny. The outrage prompted a campaign led by William, count of Provence, and Arduin of Turin, who destroyed the base around 973.
