Majolus of Cluny

c. 910–994 · 10th century · Also known as Saint Majolus, Maieul of Cluny, Mayeul

Majolus was abbot of Cluny from 954 to 994, under whom the abbey's influence spread across Burgundy, Provence and Italy, and was close to the emperors Otto I and Otto II. In 972 he was captured in the Alps by Muslim raiders from Fraxinetum and held for ransom; the outrage led William of Provence to destroy their base. He is venerated as a saint.
