Freedom Charter

1955 · 20th century

The Freedom Charter is the statement of principles adopted by the Congress of the People at Kliptown near Johannesburg on 26 June 1955, organised by the ANC and its allies in the Congress Alliance. Opening with the words 'South Africa belongs to all who live in it, black and white', it called for equal rights, a non-racial democracy and a fair share of the country's wealth. It led to the Treason Trial and became the core programme of the ANC.
