Fuad I of Egypt

1868–1936 · 20th century · Also known as Ahmad Fuad I

Fuad I of Egypt, of the Muhammad Ali dynasty, became Sultan of Egypt under the British protectorate in 1917 and took the title King of Egypt after Britain's declaration of independence in 1922. He clashed repeatedly with the nationalist Wafd party over the 1923 constitution, which he suspended for a time. He founded Cairo University's royal predecessor institutions and was succeeded by his son Farouk.
