Galicians

The Galicians are the people of Galicia, in north-western Spain, whose language, Galician, is closely related to Portuguese. In the early Middle Ages Galicia was part of the Kingdom of Asturias and later of León, and its people and nobles played a large part in the resettlement of the lands to the south. The shrine of Saint James at Compostela made Galicia one of the great pilgrimage destinations of Europe.
