Gaza Empire

c. 1824–1895 · 19th century · Also known as Gaza Nguni, Gaza Kingdom

The Gaza Empire was an Nguni state founded by Soshangane in southern Mozambique during the Mfecane. At its height in the mid-19th century it dominated the lands between the Limpopo and the Zambezi, raiding and taking tribute from the Shona kingdoms of the interior. The Portuguese defeated its last ruler, Gungunhana, in 1895.
