Gelderland
Gelderland is a province in the east of the Netherlands, with its capital at Arnhem. It descends from the medieval county and later Duchy of Guelders, which Emperor Charles V acquired in 1543. As one of the seven provinces of the Dutch Republic it had a vote in the States General, and its Veluwe heathland and fertile river lands made it largely agricultural. In 1672 French armies overran it.
