Giotto

c. 1267–1337 · 14th century · Also known as Giotto di Bondone

Giotto di Bondone was a Florentine painter and architect whose naturalistic figures and sense of space broke with the Byzantine style and laid foundations for Renaissance painting. His major works include the frescoes of the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua of around 1305 and the Bardi and Peruzzi chapels in Florence. He worked in Naples for Robert the Wise and designed Florence's campanile.
