1276–1343 · 14th century · Also known as Robert the Wise, Robert of Anjou

Robert the Wise was Angevin king of Naples from 1309 to 1343. The leading champion of the Guelph cause in Italy, he opposed the emperor Henry VII and failed to recover Sicily from its Aragonese kings. He made Naples a centre of culture, welcoming Petrarch, Boccaccio and Giotto. His granddaughter Joanna I succeeded him.
