Grand-Bassam
Grand-Bassam is a town on the coast of Ivory Coast, east of Abidjan. France signed treaties with local rulers and built a fort there in 1843, and it served as the first capital of the French colony from 1893 until yellow fever epidemics prompted the move to Bingerville in 1900. Its colonial quarter of merchant houses and public buildings was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012.
