Arthur Verdier

1835–1898 · 19th century

Arthur Verdier was a French merchant and shipowner from La Rochelle whose trading house worked on the Ivory Coast from the 1860s. When France withdrew its garrisons from the coast after the Franco-Prussian War, his company kept up the French presence, and he was named French resident in 1878. His firm opened the first coffee plantation in the colony, at Elima.
