Gabriel Angoulvant

1872–1932 · 20th century

Gabriel Angoulvant was a French colonial administrator who governed the Ivory Coast from 1908 to 1916. Abandoning earlier policies of gradual penetration, he launched systematic military campaigns against the peoples of the forest zone, disarming them, regrouping villages and imposing heavy fines and taxes, which completed the conquest of the colony by about 1915. He later served as governor-general of French West Africa and of French Equatorial Africa.
