Guimarães

Guimarães is a city in the Minho region of northern Portugal, often called the birthplace of the nation. Its castle was begun in the 10th century by Countess Mumadona Dias to protect a monastery against raids, and it became a seat of Henry of Burgundy and Teresa, counts of Portugal. Afonso Henriques won the Battle of São Mamede nearby in 1128, and the historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
