Gustav von Overbeck

1830–1894 · 19th century · Also known as Baron von Overbeck, Gustav Overbeck

Gustav von Overbeck was a German-born businessman and Austrian consul in Hong Kong who, with the British merchant Alfred Dent, obtained grants of northern Borneo from the sultans of Brunei and Sulu in 1877 and 1878. Unable to interest Austria or other powers in the territory, he sold his share to Dent in 1880, and the British North Borneo Company received a royal charter in 1881. He held an Austrian barony.
