Hasan ibn Zayd

d. 884 · 9th century · Also known as al-Da'i al-Kabir

Hasan ibn Zayd was a descendant of the Prophet's grandson Hasan, invited in 864 by the people of Ruyan and Tabaristan, angered by Tahirid land seizures, to lead them. With Daylamite support he took Amol and founded a Zaydi imamate, the Alavid state of Tabaristan, taking the title al-Da'i ila'l-Haqq. His rule spread Islam among the Daylamites.
