Mardavij

d. 935 · 10th century · Also known as Mardavij ibn Ziyar

Mardavij ibn Ziyar was a Gilite military leader who founded the Ziyarid dynasty in northern Iran. Rising in the service of Daylamite commanders, he seized Tabaristan and much of the Jibal around 930, ruling from Isfahan and Rayy and dreaming of restoring the Persian monarchy. He was murdered by his Turkish slave soldiers in 935, while the Buyid brothers, once his officers, built their own state.
